In
I Magnifici Quattro ( 2007) T-Yong Chung costruisce la sua caverna del
tesoro.
Se l’artista fosse un pirata, questo sarebbe il luogo in cui nascondere
il bottino più prezioso; ma potrebbe anche essere un giardino segreto,
una soffitta dove riscoprire cianfrusaglie dimenticate da anni, o una
di quelle scatole che da bambini si nascondono sottoterra con i propri
piccoli tesori. È la parte più remota del cervello in cui
si accumulano sensazioni, emozioni e ricordi che a un certo punto, inconsciamente,
riemergono trasformandosi in altro. E proprio come nella nostra mente
si raccolgono memorie, T-Yong Chung cerca e accatasta decine e decine
di oggetti: mobili, elementi d’arredo, attrezzi da cucina, utensili
da giardino, apparecchiature elettroniche, strumenti scientifici e qualsiasi
altro tipo di oggetto più o meno ingombrante, banale o di uso quotidiano
che si possa immaginare, tutti rigorosamente ricoperti di pittura d’oro
che fa dimenticare la connotazione originaria. Questa accumulazione, che
se da un lato ci lascia a bocca aperta dall’altra quasi ci stordisce,
diventa una lente di ingrandimento sugli elementi della vita ordinaria
e sulla magia che se ne può ricavare: per T-Yong Chung le “cose”
assumono sempre un significato che va ben oltre il loro mero valore oggettuale
e funzionale. Accanto a questa montagna incantata ci sono quattro video
che presentano piccoli sketch. I protagonisti sono l’artista e alcuni
suoi amici, ripresi mentre usano in modo inconsueto,ludico e non convenzionale
oggetti comuni e insignificanti che di norma vengono invece utilizzati
esclusivamente secondo la funzione per la quale sono stati creati. In
queste brevi messe in scena una biro viene smontata e riassemblata in
un piccolo aeroplano; alcune ragazze sedute a un tavolo si improvvisano
novelli mangiafuoco e giocano con un accendino aspirandone la fiamma;
i dischi di una levigatrice per tagliare il marmo diventano piatti in
un ballo hip hop; libri che tolti dallo scaffale diventano dischi da giocoliere.
Nulla di spettacolare, eccessivo o sopra le righe, semplicemente piccole
e impercettibili azioni che reinventano e modificano il regolare corso
delle cose per puro divertissement. La magia sta, infatti, tutta nell’idea
e nel dare una vita e una dignità nuova a oggetti altrimenti ignorati.
Con I Magnifici Quattro T-Yong Chung invita chiunque ad aggregarsi e a
incrementare questa piccola schiera di esempi, a trovare nuove e inaspettate
soluzioni e a costruire il proprio piccolo momento di leggerezza: questo
sarà solo il la che da inizio alle danze.

In I Magnifici Quattro (The Fantastic Four) (2007)
T-Yong Chong creates his own treasure chest; if the artist had been a
pirate, this would be where he would have hidden his most precious plunder.
It could also be seen as a secret garden, an attic where odds and ends
lie for years waiting to be discovered, or a box filled with small treasures
that a child hides underground. It is the most remote part of the brain
in which sensations, emotions, and memories accumulate and re-emerge transformed.
Just as memories gather in our minds, T-Yong Chong collects dozens of
objects: furniture, kitchen appliances, garden tools, electrical appliances,
scientific instruments, and every other imaginable type of cumbersome,
banal, everyday object. All of these things have been covered in gold
paint, causing the viewer to forget their original contexts and associations.
This almost overwhelming accumulation becomes a magnifying glass for the
elements of ordinary life and for the magic that can be obtained from
them: for T-Yong Chung, "things"
always assume a meaning greater than their mere functional value. Next
to this enchanted mountain are four videos that are composed of short
films. The protagonists are the artist himself and several of his friends,
filmed while they use common and insignificant objects— usually
used exclusively according to the function for which they were created—
in bizarre, recreational, and unconventional ways. In these brief mises-en-scene
a pen is taken apart and re-assembled into a small airplane; several girls
seated at a table mimic fire-eaters, playing with a lighter and inhaling
its flame; the discs of a sander used to carve marble become discs in
a hip hop dance; books taken from the shelf are used to juggle. Nothing
is spectacular or excessive; what is depicted is simply a number of small
and imperceptible actions that re-invent and modify for pure enjoyment
the regular function of the chosen objects. Indeed, the magic of this
work lies in the imagination and in giving a new life and dignity to otherwise
unacknowledged objects. With The Fantastic Four T-Yong Chung invites everybody
to join in and augment this small selection of examples, to find new and
unexpected solutions and to construct one's own small moment of levity:
only this will be the opening note that gives life to dance.
